Morrison had told the admitting physician that she had not been present when her daughter was hurt but believed she had fallen down the stairs in the house, which the hospital accepted as the likely cause, even though her fearfulness was also noted. Thats all it takes to support the journalism you rely on. MF: You know, I honestly dont know. But in this application they had two questions which are to determine financial aid. [9] In a news release, Penn's then-president Amy Gutmann, a daughter of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany who had herself been the first in her family to attend college,[11] spoke admiringly of Fierceton as "a first-generation low-income student and a former foster youth. And theyll openly talk about this. At the University of Pennsylvania, she received a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in social work through a combined five-year program. [2][h], In January 2020[4] Fierceton had a seizure and collapsed during a class for one of her graduate social work courses. It's a hard scholarship to win, but Fierceton. There, she wandered the hallways until she found the history teacher, and collapsed. But the outline of the story is this: Mackenzie was raised in a wealthy St. Louis suburb by a single mother who was repeatedly abusive, according to two state agencies. Mackenzie Fierceton has lost her Rhodes scholarship and her University of Pennsylvania master's degree is being held after an anonymous tipster called out alleged inaccuracies in her school and scholarship applications. She also alleged that Penn had on many occasions failed to follow its own disciplinary policies in its investigation of her.[16]. And I dont remember exactly what their statement was, but they disputed it. RG: Interesting. Yeah. And if you havent already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. So, yes, an article came out in the local paper saying that she had been arrested. That is when I would trace it back to. At her request Penn kept her contact information out of the school's directory on its website. I have some of my own theories, but I want to hear yours. MF: No, I found it before. [2], In December 2021 Fierceton retained another lawyer pro bono and filed her own suit against Penn, alleging that the university's investigations into her history and how she had represented herself was a "sham", undertaken with the intent of forcing her to withdraw from the Rhodes Scholarship and damaging her credibility as a witness in the Driver suit, constituting tortious interference with a business relationship and intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. A week later, Brandt interviewed Morrison again at the police station; this time she said that her daughter had injured herself, saying "I guess she has more problems than I thought." She felt as if it might have been an attempt to intimidate her. And still, it was just like: Nope. They had done their own investigation again, quotes on investigation and then I had submitted over a hundred pages of documents to them. And when will you have finished up your Ph.D.? [2][g], The packages she says she received were supplemented by hangup calls, which a faculty member Fierceton occasionally lived with recalled her receiving in the months preceding the trial of her mother's lawsuit against DSS later in her junior year. [Laughs.] Our grad school had no specific definitions or instructions, but I did have a relationship with the associate director of admissions at the time. And its no offense its not like the most profound . And then theres the part that felt like: I have no idea whats going to convince these people if I gave them medical records, I gave them forensic photos of me taken in the hospital, I gave them again like corroboration from professors of like how I described myself, from leaders in the FIGLY community. And thats actually one of the things that, if there was any doubt whatsoever about this story, in some ways it was settled by that. And to me, Im like I am a household of one, so I am the only person in my family. And I ended up reading the comments, and the comments were just horrendous. As in Fierceton's case, it took an hour to remove Driver from the building. I think they have said, well, theres different definitions and the dean who is the dean of the grad school said: Well, thats not our definition. And I didnt get an answer. Within days of the article being published, the universitys general counsel was in touch with Mackenzies mother. So thats the background of him. I was in this private school with a lot of upper-middle class or wealthy white students. Its just so obvious that you fit the criteria for low-income, but it seems like they feel like you dont fit it in the spirit of how they want it. [2], Wendy Ruderman, a reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer, called Fierceton to interview her for a story about the scholarship. The New Yorker reported that Fierceton reported this to Penn's campus police, fearing that her mother had somehow found out where she was living. But part of it is funding decisions. And then again there was trouble getting him out of the basement. "[2], Fierceton answered yes. The teen said she was sent to. Fierceton, according to Penn's response, had learned during her parents' divorce how to make calls to the child-abuse hotline and that teachers were mandatory reporters. woman who won a coveted scholarship in the US to study at Oxford after claiming she was poor, overcame childhood abuse and grew up in foster care lost the opportunity after it emerged she was. The reporter had assumed based on her status as a FGLI student which stands for first-generation, low-income that she had been poor her entire life. That night at home, Morrison, who had apparently learned of the report, confronted her daughter about it. Mackenzie told the police her mother had pushed her down the stairs and struck her in the face. When asked what she might have done differently, Fierceton told the Chronicle that while she had at some points wished she had never applied to Penn, and later considered rephrasing some of the things she wrote on her essays and applications, "[w]here I've landed is that I have a right to write about my experiences as I experienced them. There was, yes, disagreement, because I said there was blood in my hair in the essay, they said there wasnt enough blood or there wasnt blood or something. And did they say anything along those lines? I tried to help as much as I could. Because processes become Kafkaesque very quickly. Is that what sent you into a surreal state? MF: She definitely asked some questions about it. RG: And so if its a well-educated white girl from a private school, thats way too close to home for a lot of these elites. Mackenzie Fierceton didn't come until much later, but with good reason. MF: Yeah. And is it somewhat of a defense mechanism that people deploy to protect themselves? Penn also noted that her name change had the effect, whether she had intended it or not, of making her background harder to research. Mackenzie Fierceton: Yeah. Yes, definitely. She told them she felt that would be more likely to get an unbiased answer that way. In The New Yorker article, one teacher had written: She showed up at my classroom door with a bloodied and battered face and then fainted., RG: And then, Rachel Aviv, the reporter also quotes Sherry McClain, who was a nurse who was assigned to you, she said: She had two black eyes, and her hair was full of blood. But it doesnt mean you were always low-income, just that you are now. I really appreciate it. (Photo from Mackenzie Fierceton) Penn student Mackenzie Fierceton was selected as one of 32 American recipients of the 2021 Rhodes Scholarship, becoming Penn's 31st Rhodes scholar since the scholarship's inception in 1902.. Fierceton, a 2020 College graduate, is currently working on her . Photograph by Robbie Lawrence for The New Yorker Mackenzie Fierceton grew up in a middle-class suburb of St. Louis. [2], In March 2014, Fierceton began keeping a secret diary[a] documenting her life and her ruminations on her situation, writing it in her bedroom closet by the light of her phone and hiding it behind a ventilation panel. In November 2020, Mackenzie Fierceton was one of just 32 students to be awarded the Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford. Professor Walter Licht, a Penn historian who runs the program, recalls her as the sort of student who would "[ask] a question that makes everyone stop and brings the conversation to a different pitch." But those definitions arent anywhere to be found. "I think that we could contribute to the community, the broader Philadelphia community, and the West Philadelphia community more positively, instead of doing things that are not only undermining them but are actively policing them, and end up creating and perpetuating more violence," she told The Daily Pennsylvanian, the university's student newspaper. In other words, if you are parent who says that you are wishing your daughter well and youre telling the authorities that shes just mentally ill and its just a really, really sad and tragic case that shes making up all of these allegations of abuse and throwing herself down stairs, and beating herself up all for cries for help, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera you wouldnt then also pursue a multi-year long effort to destroy her life. That evening that the article came out is when I got a call from the reporter saying: I got this anonymous email that said X, Y, Z, and I wanted to let you know. And Im like: I dont know what else I could give them that would possibly convince them if their belief is as a 15-year-old, 16-year-old was journaling about my experience of abuse and hiding it in an air vent, and it was actually secretly all a plan to like accuse my mother of abuse and go into foster care so I could have a sad story. The 23-year-old planned to use. And that feels like one of them where it feels like the system is willfully misunderstanding reality in order to bend it in their direction. Yeah. And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. And then throughout the now a year and a half process [laughs] of different sort of invented processes that happened, eventually the university was like: OK, I guess shes low-income. Just a quick circling back, Im actually not sure if it was her who first reached out or if it was General Counsel Wendy White, because I later found out that they had a phone call about 36 hours after the article came out and seemed to talk pretty extensively, and then there were a lot of emails that happened. The department of social services substantiated Mackenzies allegations, as did the Missouri Child Abuse and Neglect Review Board, which is an independent state panel. "[27], For the Penn investigation, Fierceton relied on the definition on the webpage for Penn First Plus, the university's support program for FGLI students, which includes the language about the student having a "strained or limited relationship" with the graduate parent. You have a good education and youre clearly smart. Yes. And I also think we have this racist and classist notion of who can be an abuser or who can cause harm. How many people kind of fit that category that you interacted with, and how many kind of fit closer to your category, not just in your own interactions, but also in your research? She definitely asked some questions about it. And it felt very similar that, well, this cant be real. RG: And I just want to read this for people. There were so many there are, I guess I should say so many moving pieces. As in her case, first responders had experienced similar delays in finding and reaching the building, and difficulties removing Driver once they did due to the same accessibility issues. And I think I just share that because I think its a powerful example of if that is as far as theyre going to go when theres literal documentation from child me and that accusing me of that being faked, I really am like: I dont know, short of a video montage of instances of abuse from 6 to 16, what would convince them. Our concern is instead with the conduct of our. Or is that it separates two into one? Like you said, theres also the cultural stereotype of like Orphan Annie and Oliver Twist of what these kinds of kids are supposed to look like that starts so early on in, and deep in the culture or media that we encounter that I think really ingrains that into people. Deconstructed[emailprotected]theintercept.com, Photo illustration: Soohee Cho for The Intercept; Getty Images, AP, This weeks guest on Deconstructed is Mackenzie Fierceton, who was the subject of, The Philadelphia Inquirer erroneously wrote that she had grown up poor. [2], Some of those Morrison talked with did believe her; a classmate of Fierceton's recalled people likening her to the protagonist of the film Gone Girl, about a Missouri woman who disappears in order to avenge herself on an adulterous husband, whom she makes it appear killed her. [2], To White, Morrison repeated her story that her daughter had fabricated the abuse allegations. Fierceton believes it was likely sent by Morrison or one of her close relatives. [H]onestly, first-generation is never something I've really identified with fully. To me, it seems like any reader of the English language would read that in a literary sense , RG: of its self-exploration, self-doubt, trauma. [3] "Mackenzie may have centered certain aspects of her background to the exclusion of othersfor reasons we are certain she feels are validin a way that creates a misimpression," the report said. How many covert wars, miscarriages of justice, and dystopian technologies would remain hidden if our reporters werent on the beat? She is poor, but she has not been poor for long enough. Yes, to my lawyer who communicated it to me. RG: And so when you applied for your masters in social worker or sociology? And then theres also foster siblings in the sense of other people who are in the foster care system who youre living with. The Intercept is an independent nonprofit news outlet. This was about a week after. And I started interviewing people who were in the class where he died and who were in nearby classes where he died, who knew him, and paramedics who were Penn paramedics and just as many people as I could. RG: as a kid. MF: So those questions really came later. Because Im not under any illusion that Im the typical foster kid. RG: Right. Now Im sobbing, Im hyperventilating, and the staff member interrupted and said: Can we have an estimate of how much time is left? RG: Is that what sent you into a surreal state? And so can you talk a little bit about your research? Mackenzie Fierceton is the child of a doctor who attended a private prep school in a wealthy suburb. Fierceton finished her Whitfield education on a scholarship while living in foster homes. And that was the end of it, right? Aviv tells the story of Mackenzie Fierceton, a former student at the University of Pennsylvania. Cause I had assumed it was her. Was there abuse before this? If you speak, Im going to disconnect you from the call. [2], Fierceton moved into the first of several foster homes, with one other foster sibling and two biological children of the foster parents. And then I remembered that my teacher had told me to write a gratitude list. And I kind of felt like things were resolved until the next week when there was more [laughs] more downhill event. And so the fact that shes continued pursuing you to me kind of demonstrates the entire case. I have some of my own theories, but I want to hear yours. [22] It went into greater detail about her past, providing more substantiation for her abuse allegations from teachers, fellow students and their parents, Carrie Brandt (the police detective who had investigated and arrested Morrison) and her allegations that Morrison had enabled Lovelace's sexual abuse. Am I right about that? [19] The New York Post wrote that "[t]he case exposes the murky underbelly of elite schools like Penn. Thats why Im pausing to let her catch her breath. Also, there was a delay in getting the Penn Police there because they didnt know where the building was. RG: in America. RG: Penn officials, of course, have said the interview was appropriate. And those other people are kind of like the orphans that we think of in Dickensian novels. And if you havent already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. RG: Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? But while OSC allowed that it may not have been Fierceton's explicit intent to deceive, she had still done so, particularly when checking "yes" on the question on her SP2 application as to whether she was the first in her family to attend college (Fierceton stands by her reliance on Penn's definitions of FGLI on the Penn Plus website and the applicable federal laws; the university says that question is "composed of ordinary words with everyday meanings, and it makes no reference to any term or definition appearing in any other publication. And where are you at school? [23] In mid-April, Penn released Fierceton's master's degree. Fierceton had apparently made much of her status as a 'first generation, low income' student, an abuse survivor who aged out of foster care. A college counselor suggested she apply through QuestBridge, a nonprofit that helps qualified students in need find schools that will give them full financial support. Or do you think that the wheels were already in motion before that? Again following the advice of her college counselor, she did not identify her parents on her application, since she was estranged from both of them (she describes them both as "biological"[3][2]). Mhmm. Now anyone who earns that distinction is to be commended, but the article also noted that Mackenzie had aged out of foster care . Fierceton says she had not failed any tests; her Whitfield transcript shows she got a B+ in the class. And then the focus shifted to the second box. So that was what that specific sentence in The New Yorker was referencing is this kind of condensing this group of people and to one sentence. Another program official that year recalls Fierceton as seeming more vulnerable than she let on; after picking her up from the hospital following bone surgery that year, she noticed that Fierceton had a very light winter coat and few other possessions. Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? But I guess I cant say for sure. Is it as well explored territory as a school-to-prison pipeline? This could happen to me. She told Brandt it was her mother, and asked her to keep Morrison from coming to her room. After a teacher reported what they felt was abuse, a social worker came by and your mother was able to just charm the pants off her. Are we going to see these injuries? And they were the ones I believe and this is public now because Penn attached it to their response to the lawsuit I filed and I believe they were the first ones to mention that I had gone to private school and that they were questioning if I was low-income. Mackenzie Fierceton, a 2016 graduate of Whitfield School in Creve Coeur, lost the scholarship after allegations surfaced that she had provided "false narratives" to education officials, the New. Not as something that is for the benefit of the MacKenzies, the people who were being brought into the school, but actually for the benefit of the university itself, its image and also for the students. Picture: University of Pennsylvania/Instagram. But when youre filling out a box where its yes or no and theres no more information or kind of! box [laughs], its like you have to fit yourself in, saying: Are you the first in your family to attend? That was my personal statement. But it was definitely something I saw happening sort of this funneling of kids from the child welfare to criminal justice system. While her yes answer to "At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care or were you a dependent or ward of the court?" While the investigators understood, they also wrote that the limited information she provided may have been more likely to elicit an answer favorable to her. The university's police did not know at first where the building was and the city's paramedics did not know how to get to it. We need to stay on task. Why would I do that? Because that was one of the ones that really blew my mind. A 24-year-old Rhodes Scholar has left the prestigious program after being accused of lying about growing up poor, reports say. [2], Fierceton supplied the trust's investigators with her medical and court records from the mid-2010s as well as letters from 26 peopleteachers at Whitfield, the three Penn faculty members who had written her Rhodes recommendation letters, vouching for her abuse claims and saying she had never misrepresented herself. The mother hired a high-powered attorney and engaged in a local campaign to discredit Mackenzie. There were some pretty basic errors, such as my name, my birth name, and my birth place, and claiming that I didnt have a sibling, that I wasnt low-income, a lot of facts that were pretty easily disputed. Beth Winkelstein, at the time Penn's deputy provost, signed off on her application for the school, writing that "Mackenzie understands what it is like to be an at-risk youth, and she is determined to re-make the systems that block rather than facilitate success. I think this is a conversation not necessarily for people who are still in question about what happened here. We want to think of it as: If you were ever rich, youre always rich; if youre ever poor, youre always poor. Doctors diagnosed her with epilepsy, telling her the head injuries that had resulted in her earlier hospitalizations may have been a contributing factor to her developing it. And The New Yorker article also alluded to a few things that you had gotten loose with in a couple of paragraphs. RG: And it has, has she stuck by that? And whats the difference between the U.S. and English system? So, I myself, had a seizure in the basement of my grad school in January, 2020, and it took over an hour to get me out of the basement because they couldnt fit a stretcher or a backboard down the stairs or the elevator. It finds the definition the university's office uses, without that language, as being more determinative; Penn First, the FGLI student organization Fierceton had been involved with, also used that definition on its website for most of the time she was an undergraduate. And Ive brought my mentor with me. And so where is your story now? When they did, they were unable to get stretchers or backboards down Caster's stairways or elevators as there was insufficient space. Or is that it separates two into one? But her mother wasnt finished with her. Its a very under-researched field. Yeah, so Penn First for the whole FGLI community. Cause then you cant think that it could be you. The show was mixed by William Stanton. Yeah, I mean, so that specific definition wasnt public until 2018. And I ultimately didnt end up responding because I got a serious threats from Penn that if I didnt withdraw that they were going to come after my undergrad degree, and launch proceedings to revoke my undergrad degree, and never give me my M.S.W which I was supposed to graduate with in May 2021, I have not yet received that diploma if I didnt withdraw from the Rhodes and sign an NDA. [2], Shortly after the Rhodes investigation began, Rafaelle was informed that Penn was proposing to revoke Fierceton's bachelors on the grounds of her apparent self-misrepresentation. Thats the reality of it, but we dont want to think of it that way. To me, it seems like any reader of the English language would read that in a literary sense , of its self-exploration, self-doubt, trauma. Is that just an interpretation or did they say anything that suggested to you that the fact that you had gone to a private school and grown up in an upper-middle-class situation meant that you could never at any point consider yourself low-income? [2] The psychologist testified that she had seen both mother and daughter during 2007 and 2008. A Rhodes Scholar who claimed that she had grown up in the foster system has lost her scholarship after an investigation revealed that she grew up in a middle-class family and attended a $30,000-per-annum private school. It was more, I think, in the times after and the months after where I ended up like giving different medical records and all of these things to corroborate my account, but there were a few questions that were very specific to what had happened.
